Reviews

This book is profound, concise, realistic and very readable. It gets to the root of our thinking, culture and actions and how to live in a more truly enlightened way - taking appropriate care of ourselves, our communities and, in particular, our wonderful earth. It includes a profound understanding of our longterm history and place in the universe.

An essential read for absolutely everyone.

I greatly enjoyed your book, full of sound common sense and a rare perception, and to use that current cliché, ‘a wake-up call’, though how many times we seem to need waking up is beyond gauging. I really enjoyed the way you move so smoothly from human evolution to animal well-being for example, from belief systems to artistic creativity and so on. Given the trajectory of your life and philosophy, it is a very fluid summation of your ideas, influences and reading, what has come to shape your whole outlook, and makes a perfect companion to your autobiography where you could only briefly touch on some of these issues. It’s a generous book, generous in how you share so much, knowledge which has sometimes been hard-won, and sometimes at some cost to yourself.

You crystallise so much, and develop thoughts a lot of us have, but you prod and poke in such a way that you do far more than preach to the converted. We all have something to learn from what you have written.

“This book is a revelation to me, of the struggles of a person whose work I have admired for years. This searching for and awareness of a non violent way to live a full and creative life is to me one of the most moving things in your book. It should be required reading in all pottery courses in schools and colleges and should be available in every pottery where there are apprentices.....”
Warren Mackenzie

“Your words and your work carry the true motivating spirit that makes it live.”
David Leach

“Mike Dodd came to pottery because it was something he loved......and it is clear that he followed his daemon with determination, with courage and without compromise. He writes with clarity. His pots are fine exemplars of their type.”
Jonathan Chiswell Jones

“I heartily recommend this book. Mike has, in his usual inimitable, mildly eccentric style, produced something out of the ordinary.”
Phil Rogers

“A voyage driven by a life force which literally erupts in the clay and the kiln. A triumph of passion which recognises and liberates the natural qualities and textures of the world around us. The experience is not limited to the pottery itself but extends to questions about our environment and all forms of life. Take a moment to read and then re-examine. Fresh and inspiring.”
Michael Mansfield QC

“I’ve greatly enjoyed reading this moving and intelligent book.”
Tanya Harrod, Design Historian

Mike Dodd is one of the most intelligent of potters, by which I mean that in his pots and in his conversation (the two are not mutually exclusive) one is left thinking more deeply about the world. He sees the importance of questions, not easy answers. His life and work is both a celebration and the quietest interrogation of what is around us, our perception enriched by beautiful pots.
David Whiting, Writer and Critic

“A sumptuous production in every way-something to treasure.”
